Abstract

Harmful industries such as cigarettes, alcohol, and vaping have a long history of interfering with public policy. Using the example of vaping legislation in Australia, this study analysed 194 industry actor submissions to State and Federal Government consultations across a seven-year period (2017-2023) for common communication strategies. Strategies such as the misrepresentation and misuse of scientific evidence and logical fallacies were identified in the vast majority of industry submissions. Implications for policy-makers, legislative practices, and the general public are discussed.
