  • What do I do if my question isn't answered here?
Get in touch via email at asc2024@asc.asn.au or send a note in via the contact page.
  • Is there a conference app available?
There is a mobile app that gives you the option to select specific elements of the program to build your own personal agenda. Details of the app will be shared on the first day of the conference, but you can sign up already. Open this website on your mobile, and a pop-up should become available to sign in with.
  • Is there wifi available?
We will update this question with wifi details closer to the event date. Academics have access to eduroam at most locations.
  • What hashtag do I use?
The conference hashtag is #ASC2024 The ASC is on social media @auscicomm. Make sure to tag us.
  • How do you submit an abstract proposal?
Delegate talks and sessions can be submitted for consideration here. While the deadline for abstracts has passed, we still encourage you to pop your ideas into the form. If we have a way to include you in the program, we will.
  • Is catering included?
We know that one of the most important aspects of attending a conference is the casual networking over lunch or coffee. In 2024, all tickets for in-person attendance at the conference are catered tickets. There is not the option to choose an non-catered option. N.B. cooked-bird tickets do not have guaranteed catering.
  • I'm finding it hard to get to the conference. Can you help?
If you want to be at the conference, we want you to be there. We are aware the barriers we each experience range widely. While our resources are limited, our aim is to address those barriers wherever possible. Rather than offer specific grants, there is dedicated budget to increase access, be that for childcare, carer support, or anything we may be able to do to assist. We can’t promise to fix every problem, but we will do what we can to address all barriers presented to us and develop appropriate support, targeted towards individual requirements. In addition, we are implementing a new travel support standard for all conferences from 2024. The traveller discount is available for members to apply for while booking a ticket by anyone who needs to travel more than 3 hours by air to attend the conference. In 2024, this discount is $150. Please keep in mind that the organising team is small, and resources accordingly limited. If you identify a barrier that you anticipate may prevent you attending, please let us know as soon as possible. The more time we have, the more likely we’ll be able to develop a solution or support. Reach out via asc2024@asc.asn.au so that we can discuss how we might facilitate your attendance.
  • Is hybrid or online participation available?
{UPDATED} We appreciate that there will be an interest in online access for the conference. Online tickets were advertised as available until 1 April. Unfortunately, by that time we did not have enough interest in the online-only option to fund the additional technical staff required for delivery, and we are unable to offer a professional online hybrid conference experience. If you are unable to attend the conference in person and were really hoping for an online option, please get in touch via asc2024@asc.asn.au so that we can discuss how we might be able to help you access some of the sessions online. --- We want to pursue hybrid options, but for this to be financially feasible, we need to generate adequate funding to employ the additional technical staff required. We are, therefore, offering online-conference tickets at a price commensurate with the cost of supporting online engagement along with other venue and operational costs. Online tickets will be available until 1 April. If by this date the online option is not well enough subscribed to cover the cost of delivery, we will give purchasers the option of converting their online ticket to an in-person ticket or receiving a full refund. • Why do I need to request an invoice?
The ASC is still underway with porting over to a new membership system. This system would normally be the way we would accept member fees and ticket sales to conferences. While we are still working on building the portal, we must invoice for conference tickets individually. We are grateful for your patience with us as we manage this process. Invoices will appear to come from the Australian Science Communicators via Xero. You can pay through the Xero platform.
  • What social events are there? Are they included in the ticket?
We’re also putting together a couple of social events. All social events are included in the ticket price. Note that separate social program add-on tickets are available for family or friends not attending the conference who you would like to invite to come with you. Social program add-ons do not need to be linked to a conference-attending member. There is a professional development session running as a satellite to the conference, targeted to those with a science background who are entering the field of science communication.
  • Is there GST?
All ASC tickets and membership fees include Australian Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 10%. If you have any requests regarding your tax invoice, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
  • How do I buy a ticket? How much does it cost?
Conference registrations are now open and tickets are available via this form. Filling in the form will prompt the team to raise an invoice that will give you the option to pay by credit card or via bank transfer. Significant discounts are available for ASC members, and will be applied on verification of an active financial membership. All rates include GST. Prices are: Non-member Early-bird rate (until 1 Apr): $1317.42 Standard rate (until 26 May): $1549.90 Cooked-bird rate (no guarantee of catering): $1704.89 Member Hatchling rate (until 1 Feb): $878.13 Early-bird rate (until 1 Apr): $1067.52 Standard rate (until 26 May): $1255.90 Cooked-bird rate (no guarantee of catering): $1381.49 Student member Hatchling rate (until 1 Feb): $705.20 Early-bird rate (until 1 Apr): $856.32 Standard rate (until 26 May): $1007.44 Cooked-bird rate (no guarantee of catering): $1108.18 Catering at the venue and for the conference dinner is included in the ticket price, with dietary options available. • What's Perth like?
Perth is a relatively flat city so getting about by foot is viable for the CBD but it is also a spread-out city so you may like to consider public transport or hiring a car if your accommodation isn’t close to the venue. If you’re considering extending your stay, Perth has plenty of surrounding natural beauty to enjoy. Day or overnight trips to the Swan Valley give you access to walking trails, wineries, breweries, restaurants and family attractions. The Darling Ranges, known as the ‘hills’, offers more of the same with some great views. Please note that these destinations will require a car or you can book with a tour operator. There are several festivals and events in and around Perth in June that may encourage conference attendees to extend their stay. Western Australia Day is celebrated on June 3 for those planning on arriving in Perth two weeks prior to the conference.
  • Is there accessible access?
We've chosen all our venues to ensure basic accessibility considerations. If you have any specific requirements, please get in touch and we will do our best to ensure your full access to the program.
  • How's the weather in June?
Located on the west coast of Australia, Perth is Australia’s fourth most populous city. In June, Perth typically has mild and wet days reaching highs of 20°C and lows of 8°C, on average. With 10 hours of sunlight per day and occasional showers or storms, the sky is often patchy with cloud, leading to stunning sunsets over the Indian Ocean around 5:30pm. Humidity sits around 40-60%, and rainfall is expected, 15 days of the month.
  • Where's the conference venue?
The conference will be held largely at the University of Western Australia campus. Check out the Location section of the website.
  • Where's the Intro to SciComm venue?
The Introduction to Science Communication event is being held at the Pawsey Supercomputing Facility. Check out the location section of the website
  • I'm travelling from overseas. Can you help with my visa?
Australia's immigration system is more restrictive than many other countries around the world. We recommend getting in touch the your nearest Australian embassy to discuss what kind of visa you require to visit us in Perth. While we cannot assist with or fund visa applications, please do not hesitate to get in touch if you require a letter confirming your registration or contribution to the program.
  • A traveller's discount?
All future conferences for the ASC will have a travelling discount optionally applied to anyone who’s transit requires them to fly more than 3 hours to attend a conference. This discount is available optionally for members to select at checkout to assist with travel. In 2024, this discount is $150.
  • How do I get to Perth?
If you’re traveling by air, you will be landing at Perth Airport, a 20-minute journey by car from the city centre and the conference venue. Perth Airport is well connected to the Perth CBD via regular public bus and train services. The Airport Central Train Station is on the Airport Line and is 20 minutes from Perth Station in the CBD. The cash fare is $5.10 each way (if you purchase a SmartRider travel card, you will get 10% off the cash fare). Tickets and SmartRiders can be purchased at the airport.
